IN THE YEARS since our founding in April 1988 the committee has attracted a diverse group of people, who, as members, provide volunteer services, financial support, and a grass roots organization to improve racial harmony in our society.
The committee has also created several human rights commercials and the Jelly Bean Production Series that are successfully airing on Long Island cable TV networks.
In 1990, the committee established a circulation for the organization's quarterly publication, "L.I.INITIATIVE TODAY," as a service to the private and public sectors, and to our community and fellow citizens.
In 1991, the Alfred Jermine Ewell Walk-athon / Fundraiser, along with Stephen Lieberman / Antonia Franzese 'Humanitarian Award" Ceremony that followed was conceived by the LIBA-D COMMITTEE, INC.
In 1992 the LIBA-D COMMITTEE, with the Catholic, Protestant and Jewish chaplains of Hofstra University, sponsored the 1990-1999 annual Anti-Discrimination Seminar, "SAVE OUR CHILDREN, DISCRIMINATION HURTS EVERYONE".
In 1993, we celebrated our FIRST QUINQUENNIUM ANNIVERSARY AWARDS CEREMONY, honoring former (1988-1993) members of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee
In 1994, the Jelly Bean Program grew to include all grades, ( K-12 ) in the professional, live-performance enlightenment program that promotes better understanding of self and others.
On April 4, 1995, in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the LIBA-D COMMITTEE sponsored the first ever Bi-County Student Leader Summit. The day of learning and exchanging of ideas and feelings will long be remembered by the participnts. This was evident in the blockbuster Summits that followed at StonyBrook University.
In June 14, 1996, the LIBA-D COMMITTEE Awards Ceremony honored Gary Licker, Program Director, L.I. News Tonight; Drew Scott, V.P. of News Operations, WLIG-TV55; Tom Garger, Director of Programming, Cablevision; and Pat Dolan, News Director, News 12 Long Island.
In 1997, Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington, L.I., honored the Jelly Bean Program, presented by the Jelly Bean Theatre Company. In addition, News 12 Long Island sponsored a Gala Reception for the LIBA-D COMMITTEE at the Huntington Town House. Student Award Winners in Human Rights Multicultural Art Show were also recognized
In 1998, Long Island Black American Day Committee, Inc. celebrated its 10th Year Anniversary.
1999, the committee presented our first Talent Show with local talent at SUNY at Old Westbury.
In 2000, Dr. Holmes was honored by CBS-TV for his outstanding work in communities across Long Island to bring social justice for all, and his commitment to upholding Dr. Martin Luther King's dream. |
